Denton was the member of an ancient Cumberland family which had been granted the manor of Hillesdon by King Edward IV.〔(Burke, John, Burke, John Bernard. ''A Genealogical and Heraldic History of the Extinct and Dormant Baronetcies of England.'' )〕 He was returned to parliament as one of two representatives for Buckingham in 1698. The following year he was created a baronet, of Hillesdon in the County of Buckingham.〔(leighrayment.com Baronetcies: Denton to Drake )〕 He continued to represent Buckingham until 1708, when he was returned for Buckinghamshire, a seat he held until 1713.〔 Denton was the son of Alexander Denton (M.P. for Bucks 1690-1698) and Esther Herman, daughter of Nicholas Herman of Middleton Stony.
